I'm an experienced web Developer working primarily in PHP and MySQL driven websites, with a background in .ASP and Microsoft Access work. I am also fully conversant in building front end design using HTML, XHTML and CSS 2.0. I'm happily at home doing graphics work in Fireworks or Photoshop, and am a keen photographer with a good eye for layout and design, with an emphasis on usability.
I have also trained in Media studies and marketing, and with years of experience in the corporate arena, can offer advice on content and design to best position your organisations marketing message.
After studying Media, Marketing and Computer Programming at college, I worked for Centrica (British Gas, The AA, One-Tel) in their business division. I began my career in web development designing and setting up their first company intranet system.
As the company expanded, so did their intranet. As lead intranet developer, I designed, built and managed systems to support the needs of the business, including applications like training booking systems, sales script walkthroughs, searchable contact directories, employee questionaires, ISO9002 process directories, communications event calenders and callcentre support messageboards. By this stage, Centrica's business division now had 1200 employess scattered across four offices around the country.
In 2003, I was the Implementation Manager for a new Plumtree Intranet portal being launched into our division, as part of a group wide initiative. I stayed on as the Brand manager for the new system for the first year of its life, and had the chance to work with the central development team for the project, which was invaluable in terms of enhancing my knowledge of usability, information architecture, taxonomy and Search Engine Optimisation.
I also took on some part time project management work within the company, which again was a great chance to brush up key business skills in the areas of budgeting, marketing, planning, requirements writing and managing I.T. based projects.
At heart though, I am a designer. So in the autumn of 2004, I set up Broken Arrow Media and began working as a freelance web developer and designer.
